BYU students might not get a spring break, but that didn’t stop the Management Society from giving students a rest. This spring the Management Society was a driving force behind “Fast Break,” an evening of fun aimed at helping student relax before finals. The event also generated student interest in the Management Society.

“We had hundreds of students stop by and fill out an information card,” says Rixa Oman, executive director of the Management Society. “It was a great turnout and we will send the contact information on to the chapters the students were interested in.”

In addition to learning more about the Management Society, students were entered into a raffle for filling out a card. The prizes were donated by the Utah Valley, Silicon Valley, and Rancho Santa Margarita Chapters.

“The best part of the evening was meeting students who were excited about their future involvement in the Management Society,” says Michael Beheshti, a BYU MBA student and member of the Management Society Executive Committee. “Several of those students caught the vision of the Management Society’s values and mission—that was exciting be a part of.”

The Greater Teton Chapter of the BYU Management Society awarded business owner Doug Andrus the first annual Granite Pillar Award on 8 January in Idaho Falls, Idaho. More than seventy people attended the dinner where Andrus was honored for his moral and ethical leadership.

“Doug has demonstrated a commitment to live moral and ethical standards in both his personal life as well as in his business associations,” says Arthur Rammell, chapter president. “He is the kind of leader this society is seeking to build.”

Andrus is a native of Idaho Falls. After graduating from BYU with a degree in business management in 1967, Andrus and his brother, Heber, purchased the family trucking business and have since grown it into several businesses that have supported nearly 350 families in southeastern Idaho.

In addition to his business ventures, Andrus has also been involved in service activities, providing equipment to transport sandbags during the Teton Dam disaster and loads of food, clothing, and other supplies to victims of Hurricane Katrina. Andrus received the Humanitarian Service Award from BYU–Idaho in 2001 and was recognized by the Utah Motor Carriers Association as the Idaho Carrier for Humanitarian Service in 2006.

Andrus and his wife, Deanna, have thirteen children, fifty-three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

During the award ceremony Andrus credited his father for teaching him ten ways to ensure moral and ethical leadership: trust others; work hard; keep your word; have compassion; honor your name; serve others; remember the people in your business; pray daily; express appreciation; and keep your priorities straight.

“I was honored to even be considered to receive the Granite Pillar Award,” Andrus says. “There are so many others who have done so much more than I have done. I can only say that I will continue to work hard to help the underprivileged and will strive to live the virtues and principles my father taught me.”

The Greater Teton Chapter was established in 2007 and covers southeast Idaho and western Wyoming.

Dear Worldwide BYU Management Society Members:

The International Steering Committee of the BYU Management Society is preparing a video, “The BYU Management Society: Growing Moral and Ethical Leadership around the World.” This video will contain short stories from members of the BYU Management Society whose lives have been changed for the better as a result of their membership in the Society. This video will be used by chapters worldwide in recruiting new members, training chapter leaders and doing fundraising for scholarships. To see a short film by the New York LDS Professional Association of this style, go to https://marriottschool.byu.edu/mgtsoc/members/chapter_webpage.cfm?chapter_id=20 and click on the link in the upper right hand corner under the Statue of Liberty.

For those who will be attending the Annual Leadership Conference October 1 and 2, 2009, we will be filming on location at Aspen Grove and on campus. For those who will not be at the conference, the instructions below will help you film your story locally.

We are seeking the following “Cast of Characters” for this video:

• Individuals who are articulate and have had a personal, positive experience with the Management Society that exemplifies the Cultural Beliefs of the BYU Management Society (see below).

• We are especially interested in individuals who have weathered a difficult trial in their life and have found strength through their association with the Management Society.

• Ethnic Minorities and women are a priority. Please make a special effort to seek out these individuals as we desire to speak to all races, creeds and backgrounds.

Leaders, we realize there may be some among your chapters with amazing success stories, but who may not have access to video equipment, or may feel that their story is inconsequential. We are searching for those humble people who represent a cherished cross-section of Management Society members. If you know of special stories, please encourage these members to share those with us. Perhaps you could help them tell their story? Or, if that is not possible, please contact us at the e-mail or phone number listed below so we may speak with them directly.

Project Overview

* Chapter leaders identify individuals who may have a “story” to tell;
* Individuals are contacted to see if they are willing and able to share a story on video that will be memorable and support the Cultural Beliefs of the Management Society (see below);
* Chapter leaders make arrangements for a videographer (using a local member who is a professional videographer who is willing to donate their time and talents to this project is preferred, but not necessary; an amateur videographer will serve well) and interviewer (someone with good people and conversational skills) to document the person’s story;
* The interview is videotaped and transmitted to BYU for consideration to be included on our promotional video for worldwide distribution;
* BYU has contracted with a professional videographer who will edit and create a finished product, including music, transitions and titles. A special message from the Dean of the BYU Marriott School of Management will be included;
* The promotional video will be available on DVD, the BYU Management Society website, facebook and YouTube for use in recruiting new members, training new chapter leaders and fundraising for scholarships.

The focus of this video will be how the BYU Management Society has changed people’s lives. Stories will be selected based upon those that are most compelling and correlate best with the Cultural Beliefs of the BYU Management Society, as listed below:

Cultural Beliefs:

1. Focus Efforts
Tell us about a Management Society member who has personally influenced you because of their focus on growing moral and ethical leadership.

2. Meet Purposefully
Describe a Management Society event you attended that caused you to see more clearly the vision of growing moral and ethical leadership around the world.

3. Grow People

I suggested that we form a Chapter of the BYU Management Society in my ward and believe those who join would enjoy the following benefits:

Breakfasts: meet together monthly or quarterly in our area for breakfast early enough not to interfere with regular business schedules;

Networking: learn more about each other’s business and professional lives and expertise;

Speakers: invite local LDS or non-LDS leaders in business, government, the arts, etc. to speak to us;

Recognition: give an award to or otherwise recognize non-LDS local individuals and businesses who exemplify high moral and ethical standards;

Community: instead of being just a “bedroom” community, become connected with this wonderful area we live in;

Employment: be a support to priesthood leaders in providing informal consulting to those seeking jobs or career development;

Golf Tournament: hold an annual golf tournament to benefit a worthy charitable cause;

Business Setting: invite our non-LDS friends and neighbors to get to know us in a non-Church business setting;

Global: membership in this organization connects you with chapters of business professionals in 60 US cities and 18 countries worldwide who share our values;

Diversity: you do not need to be a BYU alumnus or even LDS to belong to this organization. The vision of the BYU Management Society is “growing moral and ethical leadership around the world.” Anyone who shares this vision may join. We would especially encourage women, minorities and those of other faiths to join.

“Standing for Something”: our affiliation with the Marriott School at BYU is an internationally recognized “brand” which communicates the values to which we adhere without limiting membership. The Wall Street Journal recently ranked the Marriott School #1 in regional MBA schools and #2 in ethics at MBA schools nationwide.

President Hinckley: at the Worldwide Alumni Gathering, November 7, 2003, President Hinckley encouraged us to use the BYU “brand” to build the Kingdom and stand up for moral and ethical values:

Your alma mater will grow in the respect of leaders throughout the earth who will increasingly recognize the unique abilities and unusual qualities of BYU graduates. The stature of BYU graduates will enhance the good name of the Church wherever they go and do inestimable good in advancing the work of the Lord. As moral and ethical values weaken and decline in societies worldwide, the gap between the world and this Church will widen. Those who live according to LDS standards will stand out from the crowd and receive recognition as those who can be counted on.

Elder David B. Haight: encouraged members of the BYU Management Society as follows:

We need members of the BYU Management Society to help build the moral base of our communities. You have standards, ideals and values that will not only lead you to success, but will bless and strengthen this nation and all the world.

The idea of forming a chapter in my own ward came to me today, as noted above. I talked to a few people and they were very excited. Obviously, if this model works and can be applied elsewhere, this has the potential to grow our organization exponentially. Maybe this is what we have been waiting for.

Any thoughts on forming ward or stake chapters? Could this work in your area? Is this too much, too quick? For me, I am excited and think it will work. Let me know your thoughts.
