Facebook And Business Networking

One blog post last August, “Facebook Is NOT For Business,” as the title suggests, argues that as effective as Facebook is for social networking, it is not all that it is cracked up to be for business networking. A contrary position is found on another blog post, also last August, “Top 10 Facebook Business Uses.” Time will tell. Any comments?

I believe the relatively new privacy settings offered by Facebook, letting users have different classes of friends that have variable access to elements of their profiles, helps to achieve the promise I wrote about last August. LinkedIn has a critical mass as well, but I think these privacy enhancements will turn up the heat on LinkedIn to continue innovating.
Facebook is already an effective medium for business. I joined a group of over 20,000 people that can be found when searching the “Facebook for Business” search words in the Facebook search box. This group lists other related groups in the web 2.0 arena (on Facebook) and the comments on the wall show hundreds of entrepreneurs introducing themselves and their ideas to each other. It appears that Facebook is well on its way to becoming another business tool.
As a side note, our organization has a group on Facebook. We are finding that more of our partners have signed up for the group than actual employees. The informal environment is fostering some business relationships that otherwise would not have materialized.
Many of us have also included our Linkedin web address on Facebook to further the reach of both systems.
To me, Facebook is a little too informal for business (I don’t really want to poke any potential future employers, to be honest). However I do think LinkedIn is limited in the socializing you can do… just making a connection is a bit boring. I like http://www.octopuscity.com since it combines the business focus of LinkedIn and the sociality of Facebook.
