As President Monson has often said,
When performance is measured, performance improves. When performance is measured and reported, the rate of improvement accelerates. June, 1977 New Era.
The year 2008 for the BYU Management Society is going to be a year of “measuring and reporting.” We are going to use the One Page Business Plan for this purpose. If you have not already done so, we ask that you go to our One Page Business Plan and look at the “My Plan,” “Scorecard Summary” and the “Progress Reports” sections. (To logon and for instructions on how to use the tools, review Joel Deceuster’s November 15, 2007 e-mailto all of us.) Under the My Plan section, you should find your name at the end of one or more of the Objectives, Strategies or Action Plans. This means you either volunteered or someone else volunteering you to be the “cheerleader” for that item. Remember, the duties of a cheerleader are as follows:
1. Be the cheerleader supporting this objective, strategy or action plan. You do not have to be the one doing all the work. Your role is that of supervisor. Make sure we’re on track and report in every month.
2. If you are the champion of an objective make sure you set up the Scorecard and update it monthly prior to our conference calls.
3. If you are the champion of an action plan make sure you update the Progress Report monthly prior to our conference calls.
We ask that each of you update the information for the Objectives, Strategies and Action Plans to which you have been assigned. We will go over this again in our Conference Call next Tuesday. However, if you practice with it now we will hit the ground running and be more productive on our call. If you have any questions, please feel to contact Joel directly by phone or e-mail (Joel@JoelDeceuster.com, 408-314-1941). Thanks.
Bill

Thanks Bill for doing such a great job at keeping us move forward. I’m really excited about our plan of attack for 2008! I can readily see that at the end of 2008 we’ll look back on the year and see that we made the most strides as an organization in that year than we had ever made in any previous year of the BYUMS history. I believe that.
Hi gang. I just did my “champion” update. It was very easy. Thanks to Joel’s November 15th email (which I kept open the whole time) I followed his step by step instructions and got through it just fine (and I’m a computer dummie). This will be a great tool for all of us if we all use it and keep it updated. Thanks Joel!
I just sent everyone the instructions for updating the scorecards and progress reports for our One Page Business Plan. They were sent via email. Everything you need to know is in that email. Joel
Bill, I agree with the comments above. We are going to see tremendous progress with these plans. I will be unable to attend on the 11th as I will be in the air over Iowa at that time on a trip to Minneapolis. I will attempt to get the assignment completed and on the site for the meeting.
Regarding ward-centered units of the BYU Management Society, my points are these:
–I don’t want to squelch growth
–I applaud vigorous promotion, announcents and flyers
–I do still have issue with making this too close to the Church. The Management Society is not “the Church.” We have not been officially adopted as the program for leaders in Wards…Scouting HAS been officially adopted for boys.
I can see (and I say this as a current Bishop) some confusion about what is important and whose word carries weight in the Ward.
This may work in some larger, more professional wards. I’ve moved a lot in my life–living in eleven states. There have been very few situations where there have been more than 6-8 business persons in the Ward.
–I STILL think that the bigger geography of a Stake or other wider area is a better “prescription” for healthy growth.
Robert Gardner – would you please add an item to questions that will be asked of our Chapters. My assignment is to track progress in Objective #4 – 70% of chapters will have an active Board and Chair-Elect by the end of 2008. I need to know how many of our chapters have each of these so I can begin tracking progress. Would you please include this with other information being sought from our chapters to establish a base for the metrics we are tracking? Thanks, Chris
We are preparing a request that will go out to all the chapter presidents in early January to gather information needed for tracking our progress on the one-page-business-plan. Please follow Chris Feinauer’s example and comment here if you would like to included any questions in this email. Thanks, -Robert
