Vision

Within the next 2 years we will grow the BYU Management Society into an international business association with over 7,000 paid, active members and 80 chapters worldwide. Our primary aim is to extend the values and influence of moral and ethical leadership, the Marriott School and BYU, for the development of management and business leaders around the world. To do so we will focus our efforts, meet purposefully, grow people, act professionally, think globally, align with BYU and the Marriott School and live the vision.

Looks great. The only remaining comment I have is that some chapters don’t charge dues (D.C for example??? SD doesn’t charge dues yet either) and yet would consider their members “active.” Our visions says we want “paid, active …” Personally I believe we should leave it as is, as I think that should be the goal (I think all chapters should have nominal dues — shows additional committment). Still, a few chapters may balk.

I’ve been “up to my eyebrows” and it is good…at last…to be able to comment. Wonderful work!
The vision is great; vision and goals are aggressive and NEED to be as part of our leadership “Vision of Progress.”
Qualify: dues paying members to “USA dues paying members” and ______outside USA members
I would make the scholarship objective #9 instead of number one.
I think Meridian Magazine is a fine pub. But, a better objective will be to increase communications via: (a)send e-mails to everyone in the BYU data base inviting them to join. That might come from Dr. Covey or Elder Bateman. and (b) a worldwide leadership satellite broadcast…we need to think big.
I’d take the goal up to 70% of chapters to have board and 90% to have pres. elect by end of ‘08.

Thanks Troy and Brian for the comments.

Dues Paying Members: Rixa, can we get the current number of dues paying members and make a goal to grow that? I agree with Troy and Brian that we need to be cognizant of the fact that some chapters do not charge dues. As Brian suggests, maybe we need a separate way to measure growth in the chapters that do not charge dues. I also agree with Troy and Brian that even though some chapters either do not want to or are not able to charge dues, payment of dues is very easy to measure and a good indicator of commitment. We should make clear that we are not trying to chastise the chapters who do not want to charge dues or are not able to. However, we should encourage it wherever possible.

Scholarships: I totally agree with Brian’s comment that scholarships should be at the end, not the top, of the list. Furthermore, even though it is easy to measure and has wonderful benefits, I wonder whether there is another objective that better furthers our mission of “growing moral and ethical leadership around the world” than this one. For now, I will move it to the bottom of the list pending further discussion.

Communication: As to the medium for publicity (Meridian Magazine versus e-mail from Steven R. Covey or Elder Bateman), I see the e-mail as more of a one time thing, and a very good one at that, but we are hoping that the Meridian Magazine will be an ongoing method of communication and outreach to a large number of potential members who have never heard of us. I think this is a perfect example of where we need to get everyone to weigh in on this issue and make the hard decision of which is a greater priority and focus.

Satellite Broadcast: We have been trying to get a worldwide leadership satellite broadcast for some time but, as I understand it, the brethren have not seen this as a priority, even though they have done one for the Alumni Association and the J. Reuben Clark Law Society.

Obviously, we need to get BYU/the Church’s support to do a satellite broadcast of any kind because we do not have the resources to do it on our own. Rixa, would it be inappropriate to make this an objective and try to find some other way to convince the powers that be to do this?

Active Boards: On the “raising the bar” for active boards and Presidents Elect, I totally agree. We can definitely do better than 50% if we measure, train and follow-up.

I too was finally was able to read all of the comments and thoughts Sunday evening and I am impressed with the insight and thoughts shared so far to shape this document. A couple of additional comments:
    1. Yes-The will stretch us but I believe the goals are achievable. My biggest concern is the 70% goal for boards. Do we know where we are at right now? I am more comfortable with the 50% goal of president elects.
    2. Rixa–I believe you shared these numbers at the conference but can you provide the total number of leadership conference attendees for the past couple of years?
    3. I agree with placing scholarships near the end of the list for reasons expressed but believe it should receive consistent attention in our efforts. It seems that scholarhsip programs can be one of the most unifying tasks that a chapter takes on as well as provide lots of needed continuity. Do we know what our total scholarship awards were for the past couple of years?

Bill, the work done in this document is remarkable, and as Joel indicated it is agressive, but it is also doable. Thank you for being such a diligent champion of our cause and for bringing all of our thoughts and ideas together in a succinct document.

Regarding scholarships, I feel that we can and should let them be an emphasis. We suggested taking the focus off of scholarship events in the SLC Chapter, but met with huge resistance. It seems that raising $$$ for scholarships is seen as a worthy cause that individuals and companies will rally around, and for which there does not seem to be a substitue. These dinners and golf tournaments do draw great PR opportunities and if we handle them correctly, we can preach our mission to huge audiences. We have many companies that volunteer to be sponsors and express high regard for our efforts. All this gives us visibility and the opportunity to seize the chance to really promote moral and ethical leadership. The students that receive them also are candidates to focus on our vision if we teach them correctly about our efforts and mission. If each chapter is able to help 10 students a year and we have 80 chapters, that is huge amount of influence felt by thousands of people who are involved in the events. There are many side benefits that come from the scholarship process and do give many chapters a “cause” that members rise to support. Another idea we could promote in conjunciton with scholarships is mico-credit. It is another “cause” that many would support, but not to the same extent or passion that scholarships seem to evoke. We could be the catalyst that changes perceptions!

You mentioned wanting us to sign up as cheerleaderes for tasks. There are many areas where I would be willing to help, although most seem focused on actions that Regional Directors might take. My close association and work with the Undergraduate Board might lend well to helping the goal of getting MS grads to join the MS. Alo my proxmity to Provo would let me help with logistics for attaining attendance of 200 at the next Leadership Conference. I am willing to help anywhere I can be of value.

I appreciated Brian’s comments about increasing communications. Meridian Magazine is a great start and the more methods of using global means to get the word out will benefit us a lot. One last item. I noticed that we plan to increase Ward and Stake support for the BYUMS by having desingated local representatives. This will work for the majority of chapters, but there are areas (Utah and Idaho) for which that support will be difficult to obtain. And that is OK. Chris
