BYU Management Society Blog Ideas

Below are some comments from Hal Halladay, who is in the blog business:
- the blog needs to be promoted.
It would not hurt to announce it or get a mention in the BYU alumni magazine and in an email to membership.
- it needs contributors – anything that is newsworthy and of note at the Marriott school that may be of interest should be posted
- you should consider breaking these longer posts into several smaller posts. Most readers (especially the web) do not want to read pages of content on one post or topic. Smaller posts with headlines that are attractive are better.
- search engines will pick up these posts and that is way for people to find BYU alumni association. This is vital to its future. The more posts, the more keywords that can link to this blog. Good titles will be found in search engines. There should be several posts with “BYU” “Management Society” “Marriott School” “Ethical Leadership” etc. It currently ranks #5 under the search phrase “byu management society.” You have to love that.
- Do the chapters know it exists? Do their websites link to it?
- Why not feature a chapter once a week on the blog? Let them write it and submit it to someone that can post it. Include photos! Be sure and link in the blog post to the chapter web site if they have one. Links are important. Incoming and outgoing. How about a feature on the National Steering Committee members? A profile on each?

Great idea! I think there are many people, myself included, who are not used to reading blogs, posting on blogs, etc. Some may not even know how to. In addition to these ideas we might want to send an email out to all chapter presidents telling them “how to” (step by step) post a blog. I know it is really simple but trust me, there are many of us who get intimidated by Web stuff.
Robert:
Can you or someone in your office to prepare the “how to” referred to by Troy above and send an e-mail? We should probably take a vote by the steering committee but I think we should send an e-mail to our entire database and tried to get more people involved.
Further suggestions from Hal:
You have to identify what keywords you want to be found under. For example -
Ethical leadership
Marriott school
BYU Alumni
What keywords would you expect your readers to type into Google?
Then you write posts with those keywords in the title and naturally in the content of the post.
Every one of the these chapter pages should have a link to the blog. Here is my suggestion.
Learn how the BYU Mangement Society is Growing Moral and Ethical Leadership around the World
Some other easy things that could help. Post photos from the leadership conference on flickr. Use good titles that have keywords like leadership, ethics, BYU, Management Society plus tags with those words.
Maybe take some video of the conference and upload to youtube. Same thing – Good titles and tags.
At the bottom of the blog is a link to sitemeter. You can check out your traffic.

We have had some great success advising companies using these techniques and actually started a business. We will have a great case study available soon for work we did for a couple of companies.

I hope this helps.

Would the “how to” we handed out at the conference work OK?
