BYU Management Society “One Page Business Plan”

The International Steering Committee is blessed to have the gift of advice and direction from one of the masters, Joel Deceuster. His blog posted earlier today, “Marketing May Be Everything But FOCUS Is What Makes It Happen!” is a little gem. I am going to throw all caution to the wind and take a stab at a “One Page Business Plan” for the BYU Management Society.
You will notice that there is little original in this draft. (The “Annual Objectives” are taken principally from the metrics of the online version of our “Cultural Beliefs.”) However, we need everyone’s input before this is ready for our stamp of approval. If there are no comments to this draft, we will be a sad organization, indeed. The more feedback we get from each of you, the better. Here goes!
1. Our Vision is “Growing Moral and Ethical Leadership around the World.”
2. Our Mission is “to extend the values and influence of moral and ethical leadership, the Marriott School, and BYU through a premier organization for the development of management and business leaders.”
3. Our long-term strategies are to focus our efforts, meet purposefully, grow people, act professionally, think globally, align with BYU and the Marriott School and live the vision.
4. Our Annual Objectives are as follows:
- 75% of events or presentations during the year will be focused, at least in part, on the vision.
- We will double the number of activities on our Online Calendar.
- We will double attendance at the Annual Leadership Conference.
- 75% of chapters will be represented at the Annual Leadership Conference.
- We will double the number of paid members in the database.
- We will increase to 3 to 1 the ratio of active to inactive members in the database.
- We will help create 5 new chapters each year.
- We will help reactivate 5 chapters each year.
- We will establish 5 cross-chapter connections (any combination of international and/or domestic chapters).
5. Our Annual Action Plans are as follows:
- We will hold the best ever Annual Leadership Conference with a focus on “growing moral and ethical leadership around the world.”
- We will hold the first ever Worldwide BYU Management Society Satellite Broadcast.
- We will hold focused Monthly International Steering Committee Conference Calls.
- In each of our individual regions, we will hold focused Monthly Regional Conference Calls.
- On our assigned month, each one of us will submit to Chad Little for editing, then publication in Meridian Magazine, a “knock your socks off” article containing true stories of how individual people in our region are making a difference in people’s lives by living the vision.
- In each of our individual regions, we will make a half-hour presentation to the board of each of the Chapters which did not attend the Annual Leadership Conference.
- We will prepare a written marketing plan, implement the plan and report on progress at our monthly conference call.
- Every Marriott School graduate (undergraduate or graduate) will automatically become a member of the BYU Management Society.
- Each one of us will make at least 1 blog post per month.

Bill, I’ve never had someone respond so quickly and so effectively to creating a One Page Business Plan. Great job! Lawyers must really be as smart as they say they are
I’ll send a quick outline to everyone that takes the questions a bit deeper. Then everyone can look at what you’ve done and add their own suggested wording for the vision and mission as well as additional objectives, strategies and action plans. I think you’ve done a very good job of capturing many of the important plans we were considering last week.
Once we have everyone’s input we can essentially consolidate them and then vote on which should be our top 9 objectives, strategies and action plans. This way we’ll all be in alignement and buy into the plan without reservation.
After that we’ll decide who should champion each of the objectives, strategies and action plans. They’ll all be OWNED by the Steering Committee but championed by key individuals who will make sure they receive the spot light and attention they deserves.
I’ll get that further definition of the five basic questions out to everyone ASAP. In the meantime….FANTASTIC start!!!

1) I think you did an outstanding job. I really like your initiative.
2) It would be helpful to know where we are at to see if these goals are realistic.
3) On #s 7 & 8 of the annual objectives, should that be for this year only and not each year?
4) On #9, I think that should say will and not well
5) On the annual action plan I wonder if we could state what best ever would look like. Best attendance, best presentation, best reviews, etc.?
6) I really like number 8 of the annual action plan. I worry about number 9 though.
