Grow people means that BYU Management Society members nurture individuals in their professional progress. The following are some of the steering committee’s thoughts in regards to this cultural belief and how it might be measured. Please share with us your thoughts, examples of what this means, and how we might measure our progress in this regard.
- Explanation: Chapter programs support individuals and help them grow because the society is a service organization rather than a “meeting club” concerned only with the number of attendees. All chapter leaders ensure that chapter activities provide learning and growing experiences for professionals at all stages of their careers.
- Examples:
- Member-to-member mentoring provides growth opportunities for all those involved.
- Focusing on recruiting new graduates will build the number of chapter members as well as give young professionals a network of other moral and ethical leaders.
- Creating subcommittees within the chapter increases the number of people learning leadership skills and sharing them with others.
- Member-to-member mentoring provides growth opportunities for all those involved.
- Experiences:
- Chapters such as Silicon Valley partner with LDS Employment and Young Single Adult organizations to sponsor networking lunches and special events created specifically to teach professional skills such as job search, resume writing and interviewing.
- The Dallas chapter has promoted mentoring between experienced and young professionals.
- Chapters such as Silicon Valley partner with LDS Employment and Young Single Adult organizations to sponsor networking lunches and special events created specifically to teach professional skills such as job search, resume writing and interviewing.
- Evaluation:
- Number of new chapter members versus prior year. TARGET: +10%
- Number of “mentoring” programs in each chapter. TARGET: 2 per year
- Number of seminars/workshops focused on personal professional development. TARGET: 1 or more per year
- Number of chapter leaders per chapter. TARGET minimum of 5 per chapter.
- Annual leadership turnover rate (look at rotation of leaders). TARGET: less than 25%.
- Number of scholarships awarded annually. TARGET: minimum of 2 per chapter.
- Number of new chapter members versus prior year. TARGET: +10%

I would like to share a story I received from Helena that illustrates the Management Society’s capacity to aid individuals in their professional progress.
Helena recounts, “I had a nice visit from a young man. He is from the Washington D.C. area and wants to work in the big accounting firms. I had told him to visit the DC chapter when he went home. He went on the website, joined the chapter, met people, and has two job offers. His comment was ‘This is the best kept secret in the Church.’ He could not say enough nice things about the chapter and the people he had met. He is so excited to belong to the chapter and participate in the activities.”
Thanks Rixa and Helena for that story. I think this is what the blog is for. We can always find the stories that support the Cultural Beliefs.
